“When We Were Patched” is a 15 pages story written by Deju Bryce Olukotun and it’s set in Tanzania during a Fogo tennis (an alternative tennis played in the future) game. The main character is Theodophilus, a non-human Fogo tennis referee.
This story is about Theodophilus, who meets his new refereeing partner named Malik, who underestimates and doesn’t listen to Theodophilus because he’s an artificial intelligence.
At first I didn’t like this story, maybe for the fact that we read just 3 or 4 pages a week and it made the story boring and slow. I read it for a second time and my opinion has changed: now I like this story, I love the idea of artificial intelligences as referees and I think it’s a smart idea since human referees can’t really see everything and are
often wrong. I also think this story has a secret meaning: not to judge a book by its cover, like Malik did with Theodophilus.
